Glycemic index diets or weight loss programs, often referred to as “low GI diets”, revolve around ranking each food according to its effect on our blood sugar (blood glucose) levels.  First developed as a method to help diabetics control their blood sugar levels, the glycemic index continues to gain popularity in the weight loss community.

The glycemic index includes many factors such as type of food, amount of carbohydrate, cooking method, etc.  Each food is assigned an index number within a 1-100 range.  Generally, foods more likely to increase blood sugar levels receive a higher rating (generally 70+).  Low GI diets suggest that it is possible to control appetite and compel weight loss by choosing low-GI foods.

Popular low GI diets include:

  • South Beach
  • The Zone
  • Sugar Busters
  • Glucose Revolution

Even though low glycemic index diets encourage the participant to choose healthy, nutrient rich foods, this weight loss plan must still be paired with an exercise regimen to see weight loss benefits.  As always, before beginning any weight loss or exercise program you should consult with your physician.
